The Basilicata region is synonym of Matera, the town of Sassi. Matera is one of the oldest and more characteristic housing settlement of the world. Its houses are dug into the tufa rock itself. Matera is famous all over the world and it has been declared patrimony of humanity by UNESCO. But Basilicata is not only the town of Sassi. In this wonderful region you can also find Potenza, the main city, the National Museum of Siritide a Policoro, Melfi Norman Castle, the Pollino National Park, shared with Calabria, and the Metaponto Greek ruins. Among Basilicata’s lovely beaches there is Maratea, the most famous seaside resort, also known as “The pearl of the Tyrrhenian sea”. In the regional cuisine small peppers, aromatic spices and olive oil go perfectly with orecchiette, fusilli, strozzapreti, stascinate e cavatelli, the typical Pasta dishes. A tradition that has passed over the centuries is the pork cuts that gives birth to ham, sausages, capicolli, bacon and the famous luganega (a particular salami).
