Umbria is the Italy’s green heart. Its landscape is rich in world-known places such as the Marmore Falls, the Tevere Valley, the Trasimeno lake, the Castelluccio Plain below the Sibillini mountains, and Clitunno plain with its famous river. This region, besides its natural beauties is also known worldwide for the culture, art and history of its wonderful cities. Perugia, the regional capital, is known for the Umbria Jazz: it also hosts an old university where thousands of students come to study from all over the world. The other main cities are Terni, Città di Castello, and Spoleto: here the Duomo soars above a characteristic historical centre, and visitors come here in their thousands to see the Festival dei Due Mondi* every summer. Todi, Gubbio, Orvieto, Montefalco, Spello, Bevagna, Trevi, Foligno, Norcia and Cascia are all small villages famed for their tidy well-preserved historical centres. Assisi deserves a special mention: it is the place where S. Francesco lived and died, and its remains are still kept in the Basilica. Thousands of visitors and devotes come here every year also to admire the stunning frescos of Giotto and Cimabue. Regional gastronomy has peasant origins, and it is based on simple and natural ingredients: especially appreciated are the Olive Oil (among the best oils in Italy), white and black Tartufo, Colfiorito Potatoes and salted meat traditionally made. Main dishes are Stringozzi al tartufo or alla spolatina and faraona alla ghiotta. Most typical wines are Trebbiano (white) and Sagrantino di Montefalco D.O.C.
